In Toyooka, the timeless craft of "Toyooka Willow Carft" has been woven into daily life for generations, shaping both culture and spirit. We honor this heritage—an art born from the DNA of the land—reimagining it with contemporary sensibility and carrying its elegance into the future. Tradition is not a relic of the past; it is beauty living in the present, a quiet, enduring light entrusted to the next generation.

柳行李と豊岡杞柳細工
奈良・正倉院に収められた日本の宝物のひとつに、柳行李（やなぎこうり）があります。これにより、この伝統工芸には約1300年以上の歴史があることが証明されています。
（神話を含めると2000年の歴史ともいわれます）

柳行李は、防虫・防湿効果を備えたコリヤナギを丸木のまま編み込み、麻糸でしっかりと繋いだ箱です。古くは風呂屋の脱衣かご、飛脚の荷物箱、反物や書物の収納、弁当箱など、あらゆる「箱」として人々の生活に溶け込んでいました。

大正・昭和期には、コリヤナギを薄く割いて加工する技術が発展し、籠や箱などの多様な製品が作られるようになりました。さらに輸入ラタンの使用も始まり、総称として「杞柳製品」と呼ばれるようになります。

やがて、経済産業大臣指定、つまり国の伝統的工芸品として認定され、正式名称は豊岡杞柳細工となりました。

かつては豊岡から全国、そして世界へと広がったこの技術は、但馬地方の一大産業であり、職人や商人を含め1万人規模で支えられていました。

しかし令和の現在、この伝統技術を継承し生業としている職人や工房はごくわずか。
屋号を掲げ、今も手仕事を守り続ける者は、数えるほどしか存在しません。

Yanagi Kōri and Toyooka Willow Craft.
Preserved in Nara’s Shōsōin, Yanagi Kōri is a willow-woven box with over 1,300 years of history. Crafted from insect- and moisture-resistant kori-yanagi, its branches are carefully woven and bound with hemp thread, creating a functional and enduring art.

Historically used as baskets, carriers, storage for textiles and books, and even lunch boxes, these objects were integral to daily life. Over time, techniques evolved, incorporating thinly split willow and imported rattan, forming the craft known today as Toyooka Willow Craft—a government-designated traditional craft.

Today, only a few master artisans continue this living tradition, preserving a quiet, enduring art that bridges centuries and embodies the spirit of Toyooka craftsmanship.

経済産業大臣が指定した技術・技法・原材料で制作され、産地検査に合格した製品には、伝統マークのデザインを使った「伝統証紙」が貼られています。この伝統証紙がs貼られている製品は、検査を実施したものであり、品質について誇りと責任をもってお届けする製品です。

経済産業大臣指定伝統的工芸品とは

・生活に豊かさと潤いを与える工芸品
・機械により大量生産されるものではなく、製品の持ち味に大きな影響を与えるような部分が職人の手づくりにより作られています。
・100年以上前から今日まで続いている伝統的な技術や技法で作られたものです。
・品質の維持や持ち味を出すために、主要な部分が100年以上前から今日まで伝統的に使用されてきた材料でできています。
・一定の地域において、ある程度の規模を形成してつくられてきたものです。

Designated Traditional Craft Products
Products recognized as Government-Designated Traditional Crafts carry a special symbol mark, known as the Traditional Craft Seal.

Only items made using the officially designated techniques, methods, and materials, and which have passed rigorous regional inspections, are eligible for this seal.
A product bearing the seal represents a promise of quality and a commitment to craftsmanship.
